Crypto Fundamentals (Without the Hype)

What crypto actually is, what the real risks look like, and what to ignore entirely.

8 min read·

Crypto is not 'magic internet money' and it's not 'all a scam.' It's a category of assets with real technical primitives, real markets, and very real failure modes.

What it is. A blockchain is a distributed ledger — a database that no single party controls. Bitcoin is digital scarcity; Ethereum is programmable money; the rest are variations on a theme.

What's real. Cross-border payments at low fees. On-chain settlement that never sleeps. Programmable contracts that execute without intermediaries. These are not hypothetical — they happen daily.

The actual risks. Counterparty risk (exchanges fail), key management (lose your seed phrase, lose your funds), and volatility (50% drawdowns are normal, not exceptional).

What to ignore. 'Guaranteed APY' yields, anonymous founders, paid celebrity endorsements, and any project that needs you to recruit friends. These have been wrong every cycle.
